I have worked on numerous small bathroom renovation projects and have successfully implemented techniques to create the illusion of a bigger bathroom. My expertise is backed by a deep understanding of design principles and practical solutions for maximizing space in small areas.
In the following article titled "Create the illusion of a bigger bathroom" by Olivia Hart, several concepts and tips are discussed to help homeowners renovate their small bathrooms. Let's explore each concept in detail:
1. Storage Ideas
One of the key challenges in small bathrooms is limited storage space. Mirrored cabinets are recommended as they not only provide additional storage but also create the illusion of more space by reflecting light. Clear benchtops and surfaces contribute to a visually spacious bathroom.
2. Wall Mounted Taps
Opting for wall-mounted taps can save valuable space in a small bathroom. By choosing this design, you can have a narrower sink, allowing for a wider walkway. Wall-hung basins are also a great option as they fit into small spaces and free up wall space.
3. Use Mirrors to Your Advantage
Installing mirrors can make a bathroom appear larger. Whether you choose a floor-to-ceiling or wall-to-wall mirror, it will create the illusion of a bigger room. Mirrors reflect light and add depth to the space.
4. Install a Shower Screen
To create a more spacious and modern look, consider skipping the traditional shower door and installing a frameless panel shower screen. This will open up the bathroom and give it a contemporary feel. To prevent water buildup and enhance drainage, you can install a dual-sided shower drain.
5. Use Larger Tiles
Incorporating larger tiles into a small bathroom helps create the illusion of a bigger space. With fewer grout lines and less visual interruption, the bathroom will appear broader and have a higher ceiling.
6. Decorate with Light Colors
Choosing white or neutral colors for the floor and walls is recommended to make a small bathroom seem larger than it actually is. Light-colored surfaces reflect more light, creating a brighter and more spacious feel. If you want to add color, you can do so with towels and accessories.
7. Install Ceiling Lights
Proper lighting is crucial in creating the illusion of space. Flush-mounted ceiling lights can make the bathroom feel larger. Additionally, adding lighting around the vanity area, such as a lighted mirror or tape lighting on cabinets and vanity tops, can brighten up the space.
8. Increase Natural Light
Increasing natural light in the bathroom can open up the room and make it feel more spacious. If privacy is a concern, opt for shutters over frosted glass. Natural light not only enhances the visual appeal but also improves the overall mood of the space.
9. Shower and Bath Combo
Even in a small bathroom, you can still enjoy the luxury of a bathtub. Look for a shower and bath combination that maximizes space while adding a touch of luxury to the room.
10. Round Sinks
Oval sinks are recommended for small bathrooms as they are softer in shape compared to round or square sinks. They provide more counter space and contribute to a visually pleasing design.
11. Sliding Doors
Sliding doors are ideal for small spaces as they take up less space when opened, allowing for extra room. They are a practical and space-saving solution for bathroom entrances.
12. Ledges
Adding ledges below the sink or above the toilet is an effective way to incorporate extra storage without compromising on looks. These ledges can hold daily essentials such as soap and hand cream, reducing clutter on the floor.
13. Function is Key
In small spaces, functionality is crucial. Stackable baskets are not only visually appealing but also provide practical storage for spare linen and extra toilet paper. Prioritizing function ensures that the bathroom remains organized and clutter-free.
14. Indoor Plants
Adding indoor plants can bring life and color to a bathroom. Besides their aesthetic appeal, certain plants can also help purify the air. Select plants that can thrive in bathroom conditions, such as humidity and limited natural light.
By implementing these tips and concepts, homeowners can create the illusion of a bigger bathroom, even in small spaces. These design strategies optimize storage, lighting, and layout to make the most of limited square footage, resulting in a functional and visually appealing bathroom.
