Spent the first part of this week at Maryland HIMSS Health + Tech Conference learning from a great slate of speakers, networking, and navigating flight issues (successfully!).Highlight of the sessions was hearing Varun Singh, president of Moveworks, and Philip Campbell, CTO at Luminis Health, talk about the responsible use of AI to remove the burden on support desks and to improve employee experience when navigating employee administrative questions. Also shout out to Delta for helping me get home!#MDHIMSS24 #MDHIMSS

Inspired by this article and Elon Musk’s statements earlier this month that AI “will probably be smarter than any single human next year” and “by 2029, AI is probably smarter than all humans combined” I created a list of near-term, mid-term, and long-term tasks that are likely to be replaced by AI in the healthcare provider space. Here's my best guess at how AI-driven automation in the healthcare provider will impact key workflows over the next decade. Companies mentioned are at least one per task that are already or are likely to benefit from advances in AI, timelines are when each area starts working its way up the ‘Slope of Enlightenment’ on the adoption curve.Near-Term (0-3 years):Appointment Scheduling: (Zocdoc)Medical Transcription/EHR Documentation: (Nuance Communications, Abridge)Billing and Coding: (Optum, 3M)Patient Outreach: (Luma Health)Prior Authorization: (Janus Health)Claims Processing: (Change Healthcare)Insurance Verification: (Availity)Mid-Term (4-7 years):Automated Referral Management: (ReferralMD)Population Health Management: (Epic)Medication Reconciliation: (Surescripts, DrFirst, Inc.)Compliance Monitoring: (HealthStream, symplr)Performance Analytics: (Health Catalyst)Staffing Optimization: (ShiftWizard by HealthStream)Clinical Decision Support: (VisualDx)Long-Term (8-10 years):Autonomous Medical Assistance: (Ava Robotics)Personalized Treatment Plans: (Tempus AI)Patient Triage: (Buoy Health)Disease Prediction and Prevention: (ClosedLoop)Continuous Monitoring: (BioIntelliSense, Inc)Just like in my household, it'll be interesting watching the controlled chaos unfold in healthcare. #AIinHealthcare #FutureofMedicine #InnovateOrStagnate

"The future of medicine is going to be as much about networks as it is about molecules. The future of healthcare is a full-payer model that engages patients in their care." - Dr. Patrick Soon-ShiongIn a payer-led managed care model where the payvider bears full risk, patients may benefit from more informed decision-making as communication would flow more seamlessly. We'd fully connect treatments with the costs associated with them, shaping a cohesive, patient-engaged, and financially sustainable healthcare ecosystem. This may be happening today, whether we like it or not:🏥 Health systems are venturing into insurance lines of business (payviders) and large payers like Optum are acquiring health systems/provider groups.🤝 Simultaneously, the healthcare landscape is witnessing a surge in mergers and acquisitions (M&A), paving the way for larger and more comprehensive networks. Health systems are strategically partnering, acquiring, and collaborating to offer a spectrum of services under one unified organization.💡 The goal? To provide patients with a seamless and coordinated healthcare experience from primary care to specialized treatments, all within a unified network. This not only enhances operational efficiency but also fosters a holistic, patient-centric approach.Exciting times ahead! #FutureOfHealthcare #IntegratedNetworks #HealthcareTransformation

Great example of maximizing the value of data that exists in the EHR. Key takeaways:- You can't improve what you don't measure. Invest in not just designing reports but engaging with operations to build trust and adoption of the reports.- Efficient ORs can improve patient safety, increase OR throughput, and improve patient, surgeon, and staff satisfaction.- ORs can generate up to70% of a hospital’s revenueand account for up to40% of its costs. Even small improvements to OR throughput drives significant financial benefits.- OR reporting initiatives should include discussion around standardizing organization-wide surgical policies, key performance indicators, and reports, and reviewing these reports with OR staff regularly. If you’re looking to improve your OR efficiency, consider a project focused on designing, standardizing, and driving adoption of standard Epic reports. 🚀👨⚕️👩⚕️💰🏥https://lnkd.in/e8fsX6RJ
